Broadbent creates yet another slyly simple, yet deftly complex, portrait of the Catholic convert who translated his conviction that no person is beyond spiritual redemption into his work with the British penal system.

They could have made for some deadly passages, but thanks to Morgan's writing and a superior cast, these discourses on the nature of evil, and whether the truly evil ever can be restored to humanity, are mesmerizing.

In lesser hands, Longford might have come off as dogmatic or, worse, pathetic. Broadbent endows him with a cocktail of emotions that makes Longford simultaneously heroic and vulnerable. It is a performance that will likely not be forgotten later this year when Emmy nominations are announced.

"Longford" dives head-long into some of the most complex questions of human morality, and it's a pleasure to watch an actor of Broadbent's caliber tackle the notion of forgiveness with dignity and solemnity in what is easily one of the best TV movies you're likely to see this year.

[Broadbent] is unrecognizable and remarkable in the role of Longford, capturing both the man’s dotty hauteur and his awkward, absent-minded chivalry.

It's Broadbent as Longford, made an outcast for his empathy, whom you'll not forget.

I said this is an old-school literary movie because it is a gallery of objective portraits, leaving the viewer to absorb narrative while pondering various parallels and themes.

"Longford," perhaps, could as easily have been a stage play — a taut, four- or five-person one. But the filmmakers artfully weave in documentary footage of the period to remind us of the personal suffering and public hand-wringing the killers caused.

Longford is never less than gripping. But it unconsciously apes the moral myopia that afflicts its protagonist.

Richard J gave it a10:
I don't know what film Jack C. was watching but it wasn't the flawless and thought-provoking "Longford" that I saw with brilliant performances from Jim Broadbent, "Rome's" Lindsay Duncan, Samantha Morton, and Andy Serkis. Jack C.'s an imbecile, and that's clear from the contradictory comments in his idiotic review. He criticizes Samantha Morton for being "comatose" and then criticizes Andy Serkis for being too charismatic. Perhaps he would have preferred if Samantha Morton had been too charismatic and Andy Serkis had been "comatose." Either way, his review cancels itself out and proves that he is a mindless fool which the great "Longford" was wasted on. If you are going to leave user comments on the metacritic forum, it is essential that you mustn't have been lobotomized first.

Dianne S. gave it a10:
Very thought provoking and superb acting by all.

Michael D. gave it a9:
I just watched the film On Demand....it sparked a lot of discussion between my partner and I about the power of forgiveness, its place is Christianity and Judaism...the performances and script are terrific

R Sanders gave it a9:
Great. Based on a true story.

Jack C gave it a2:
Clunker of an expositional script plus stodgily "sensitive" direction seemingly designed to appeal to professional focus group goers equals a deadly dull drama. Don't believe the hype about the performances, either. Broadbent's tics will make your head spin, Morton's her usual comatose self and Andy Serkis disastrously endows Ian Brady with something approaching an evil charisma. Don't waste your time on this one if you're looking for complexity.
