If you'd had enough of ogling at "Calibur 4," cop a feel of SC Arcade. It's still a handful. [Oct 2008, p.100]

Under seven quid for one of the best one-on-one fighters since "Street Fighter II"? Bargain!

At ten bucks it is hard to go wrong, even if it lacks online play, a mission mode and true widescreen support. Soulcalibur is one of those games that everyone needs to play at least once in their lives, and there has never been a better time to jump in.

Take every cool martial arts weapon that you wanted as a kid, and add to it many of the killer utensils from medieval times– that pretty much sums up the weapons used by Soulcaliber characters. And, instead of keeping character types of a consistent ilk, Namco went all over the board– from reptile to Asian Elvis– in order to keep us coming back. We’re talking about some of the most highly-regarded fighting game characters of all time.

For some strange reason one of the best features of the original game, Mission Mode, is absent. Even more disappointing is the lack of any online versus mode. Sure I can thump my brother in 2-player offline whenever he comes over, but fighting games are perfect for multi-player.

Over the past decade, the Soul series has and added numerous characters and gameplay mechanics. However, the series' highlight remains Soulcalibur 1. It took the ideas that debuted in Soul Edge and evolved them into a cohesive and enthralling package.

Soulcalibur still controls like a dream, allowing button-mashers to unleash a flurry of unintentional moves, and even better, rewarding seasoned stratetists with a sophisticated set of beat-downs. [Aug 2008, p.79]

Could it have been even better, had they waited and used more space to include absolutely everything? Undoubtedly, but a big chunk of Soulcalibur for 800 Microsoft Points is still one hell of a treat.

It has all of the major bits, but lacks the little extra touches that could have made it a true must-have. That said, the game is still fun, even if it's got a few nagging flaws.

In fact it just goes to show that quality titles can be brought back from the dead and released on XBLA, and with a whole slew of fantastic titles waiting in the wings from the Dreamcast's back catalogue let's hope that releases like SoulCalibur HD are the shape of things to come, and we can dispense with all that nasty shovelware that's blighted the marketplace recently once and for all.

No online play or mission mode, but it's still a top-notch fighter. [Sept 2008, p.85]

The controls are great, as you can chain together Soul Charges and attacks without difficulty. Its graphics, despite a lack of widescreen support, look excellent.

If, however, you're like me and have a whole bunch of friends who grew up with Soul Calibur, you're going to be spending all your time in Versus mode.

The absence of the Missions Mode is disappointing and online play would have been a blast, but the weapon-based fighting system is still a lot of fun. The characters and levels are all there, the game looks great in HD and let's not forget this is a Live Arcade release; it sure isn't a bad way to spend $10.

It should have been released months before "Soulcalibur IV" comes out, not the Wednesday before. [Issue#35, p.114]

This classic fighter has aged well, but the XBLA version lacks both online play and features found in the Dreamcast game.

Fighting games and fancy graphics have passed Soul Calibur, but if you've got any nostalgia for this one, it's a golden oldie that just might be worth the steepest price of all: having to play a fighting game on the 360 controller's awful D-pad. If you're willing to put up with that, the 10 bucks is trivial.

Giant Bomb
Soul Calibur gets the fighting right, but without online play or the single-player mission mode that made it fun to play alone, this XBLA re-release is a flimsy package.
