Games Radar UK (Pre-2006)
This is as unsettling and absorbing an adventure as you could hope for.

With eye-popping graphics and outrageous sound effects, Alone in the Dark excels at being creepy.

Total Video Games
Truly a fantastic game and shines like a diamond stone. With the limitations of the PlayStation, the developers have still managed to cram every last bit of detail into this one. Go out a buy it. Now!

The prerendered scenery would be stunningly beautiful if it wasn’t so darn creepy—it’s some of the best scenery on the PlayStation.

This game is tough – but from my general experience, this is what survival horror games are all about.

PSX Nation
It does enough things right to merit the attention of the few gamers still willing to put up with 32-bit "RE" gameplay (circa 1996) in the year 2001.

GameShark
An above average survival horror game with a few new twists and a compelling story.

Hot Games
Even with the graphical limitations of the PS One, the game still looked good enough to scare the wits out of us, and often seemed more threatening and tense than the "Resident Evil" games.

Game Revolution
a satisfying horror game with many of the sinister elements that made the original so good. But its failure to do anything new that "Resident Evil" hasn't already done (other than a cool flashlight) leaves this zombie hungering for something more. Brains, anyone?

Core Magazine
Graphically the game is unequaled on the PSone, but things like poor scripting, painful voice acting and tired puzzle elements reduce the overall appeal significantly.

Gaming Age
It has enough graphical flair, intriguing storylines, and just down right creepiness, to make you forget this is being played on a 6 year old system.

Even with its dodgy graphics and other niggling problems, Alone in the Dark will still make you jump - even with the lights on.

Electric Playground
AID:TNN comes off, despite its graphical wizardry, a little…sophomoric. The majority of the cinematic cuts and voice acting are god-awful-bad, and not even in that charming, maybe-they-meant-it, B-movie Resident Evil way.

GameSpot
With versions in the works for both the PlayStation 2 and the Dreamcast, though, owners of multiple consoles are probably better off waiting for the graphical enhancement that will come with a more powerful console.

Electronic Gaming Monthly
Illogical puzzles, vague directions and objects almost impossible to spot against the backgrounds cause you to waste too much time wandering the same rooms again and again. [Sept 2001, p.147]

Matty S. gave it a 10:
This game is Amazing! I loved it from the start. The best thing is 2 discs with two totaly different adventures for only £21.99. My opinion 4 all ppl out there... BUY IT!

Alan W. gave it an 8:
This game was pretty cool, but there were too many keys that when you examined them didn't hinder good instructions. I could never find the doors the keys said that they went to! Overall, a good survival/horror game with decent graphics, and, "That almost made me piss my pants!" effects.

Victoria B. gave it a 7:
It's the ultimate game meant for those quick witted thinkers and has that distinct horror/survival game flavor.

Wira P. gave it an 8:
Totally great game. Will wait for the next game, and I hope its not gonna be the same title.

Evil Resident gave it an 8:
Let Me Get Straight To The Point About That This Game: It Is Scary, So Before You Decide To Play It, I Suggest That You Buy A Few Extra Pairs Of Pants Because You Will Be Filling Them With A Solid Substance. You Can Tell Straight Away That This Is Going To Be An Excellent Game By The Opening FMV Sequence, and Once The Game Starts The Graphics And The Lighting Effects Are Superb. There Are Very Few Glitches In The Game, but The Thing That Annoyed Me A little Bit Was When The Character Walked Onto Another Screen And The Game Sticks For A Split Second But Is Still Noticable. There Is A lot Of Gameplay To Be Had In This Game With It Having 2 Cd's And 2 Scenarios, One With A Women And One With A Man, Both Having Different Reasons For Going Onto Shadow Island. They Get Split Up At The Beginning Of The Game And Have To Complete Numerous Puzzles To Find What They Are Looking For And Get Of The Monster Invested Island. Over All The Gameplay And The Story Is Excellent And If You Decide To Buy This Game, You Will Not Be Disappointed.

Jo S. gave it a 9:
This game is very good but some of the solutions are very obscure and it it pure luck if you find some of them but it is very scary, exciting and fun. The graphics are awesome.
