Going beyond "run and gun corridors," "monster-closet AIs" and static worlds, BioShock creates a living, unique and unpredictable FPS experience. After your plane crashes into icy uncharted waters, you discover a rusted bathysphere and descend into Rapture, a city hidden beneath the sea. Constructed as an idealistic society for a hand picked group of scientists, artists and industrialists, the idealism is no more. Now the city is littered with corpses, wildly powerful guardians roam the corridors as little girls loot the dead, and genetically mutated citizens ambush you at every turn. Take control of your world by hacking mechanical devices, commandeering security turrets and crafting unique items critical to your very survival. Upgrade your weapons with ionic gels, explosives and toxins to customize them to the enemy and environment. Genetically modify your body through dozens of Plasmid Stations scattered throughout the city, empowering you with fantastic and often grotesque abilities. Explore a living world powered by Ecological A.I., where the inhabitants have interesting and consequential relationships with one another that impact your gameplay experience. Experience truly next generation graphics that vividly illustrate the forlorn art deco city, highlighted by the most detailed and realistic water effects ever developed in a video game. Make meaningful choices and mature decisions, ultimately culminating in the grand question: do you exploit the innocent survivors of Rapture...or save them? [2K Games]

The hours spent playing this masterpiece were the perfect encapsulation of why videogaming is such a favourite waste of time for so many of us. Thrilling, terrifying, moving, confusing, amusing, compelling, and very very dark. BioShock isn't simply the sign of gaming realising its true cinematic potential, but one where a game straddles so many entertainment art forms so expertly that it's the best demonstration yet how flexible this medium can be. It's no longer just another shooter wrapped up in a pretty game engine, but a story that exists and unfolds inside the most convincing and elaborate and artistic game world ever conceived.

Bioshock is that rare game where the plot, environment, and combat are all steps above the normal video game experience. Games at their very best, like this one, can create amazing alternative worlds for us to inhabit, doing those things we can't do in real life. This is one product the free market should be very happy to have.

Everyone will play it differently, and have a different experience. Some like myself will find it drenched in tension and atmosphere, having run into many a situation where the poop was scared out of me. Others, like a friend of mine, will claim that its intuitiveness, combative freedom, and creativity puts it above the spiritual predecessor "System Shock 2," and wonder at how convincing the whole affair can be.

The art direction is outstanding; mixing art deco architecture, classic 1950’s graphic design and tons of great old music from the early jazz era that adds a musty creepiness to the overall atmosphere of the game. It’s definitely not your typical Space Marine fare, and that’s a very good thing.

It's not just the fact that BioShock is a real looker, or the fact that as a first-person shooter alone it stands up to all of its competitors; it's the thought and craftsmanship that went into realising Rapture, its emotionally-jarring denizens and its compelling and seamless narrative that pushes you willingly forward from chapter-to-chapter.

BioShock is on the same par as those great classic films that have won awards for years and this one will for the video game industry. BioShock is one of the few games that I’ve reviewed in my entire career that I feverishly want to go back through and play again to not only enjoy the dynamics of the gameplay, but also appreciate all of the effort put into a great story and an amazing underwater city named Rapture, which sucks you into its world the second you step through its doors.

The most amazing thing about Bioshock is that it never comes off as preachy or self-indulgent. For all its many themes, it is, and can be enjoyed as, exactly what Ken Levine has always said it is: a shooter. One of the very cleanest, best-executed shooters ever made.

There is art here, despite what many would say isn't possible with games, from Roger Ebert to game designers like Hideo Kojima... BioShock stands as a monolithic example of the convergence of entertaining gameplay and an irresistibly sinister, engrossing storyline that encompasses a host of multifaceted characters. This is an essential gaming experience.

While BioShock has an intriguing back story, the game’s episodic, mission-based structure lacks the propulsive momentum of games like "Half-Life" or "Max Payne." The story is better than that of many action games, but BioShock’s gameplay and visuals are so utterly brilliant that it is a shame it fails to reach the same level of greatness in its storytelling.

This Game Is Fantastic! Its Has a mix of Horror and Thrill. This Game Will Keep You On Your Toes Waiting For Mutants to Jump Out and Get You! And Randall M. Just Because u have a shitty computer and cant run the game doesn't mean the game is bad.

[Anonymous] gave it a1:
Ridiculous game. Bad graphics, bad level design, unrealistic, bad lighting, bad textures, bad water animation etc. that with everything maxed. The PC version is broken because mouse controls are non existent, as in too high acceleration. waste of money, waste of time.

Michal B. gave it a10:
Great story, great audio-visuals, great gameplay. What else do no need to say that this game isn't one of the best games of all time?

Jonny Boy gave it a9:
I live to play 1st person shooters. and this is a great one. clean graphics that don't require too much from your hardware. I just felt that the game just seemed a little repetitive toward the end. it has a decent selection of weapons but it could have had more. You can go thru almost the whole game with barely using his "powers". so they are nearly useless half the time. the game can get a little freaky. just watch out for people to randomly show up out of nowhere.

Andrew F. gave it a10:
A true work of art. Easily the best game of 2007, and the best game in a very long time. Thankfully, the creators took their time on making a great singleplayer game instead of following the rest of the crowd and throwing in some garbage multiplayer. Great decision, can't wait for the sequel (hopefully).

Jae C. gave it a5:
There's no way bioshock is better than crysis... absolutely no way, It's barely even opinion saying Crysis is better than it. Bioshock looked like it was going to be better but it wasn't at all. When you play bioshock, you get your first plasmid, you kill your first few enemies, you hack your first security thing you think it's a pretty great game, but you literally can feel the tediousness not even that far into the game. I beat bioshock, to beat bioshock, I beat Crysis because I couldn't stop playing, I knew it would be better to conserve than to beat it in one day but I couldn't help it. They both feature cool abilities and weapon upgrades, but I can honestly say Bioshock's coined "rpg aspect" is more dull than the upgrades and suit abilities in Crysis. Bioshock "laughs at fps games with static environments", so they make you walk through the same exact tunnels in the same exact underwater city, fighting the same exact enemies, and depressingly never having an interactive encounter with another "friendly" human being. There's not even modding to Bioshock which is a HUGE setback, imagine how much you could improve on the game if there was modding, but no no modding, no online play, not even a co-op story mode. The only thing I thought Crysis did wrong was how the aliens were. From the opening prologue you get so enticed, thinking there's some deadly subtle alien(s) lurking through the jungle linked to the discoveries made, but when I saw taht the aliens were just some flying, squid-like, things in metal armor it was kind of a let down. Either way I can't wait for a Crysis 2, and Bioshock left me unsatisfied, very unsatisfied.

Nick M. gave it a9:
This game has an incredible storyline and great game play, along with its immerse and clever enemies. But this game fails to bring anything new to the FPS shooter line, its just another run and gun game. But with all the items there are to find and the multiple hours i could play this game i give it a 9. Pros: Great Story Great Graphics Amazing AI Easy to grasp Just plain Fun Cons: Run of the mill FPS Lack of Ammo&Supplies Last boss was incredibly easy Cant get all the powerups in 1 playthrough The scare factor was very low, but i guess its not supposed to be a horror though.
